History
Who put the Bull's Head in Bullhead City?
William Harrison Hardy,
founder of Hardyville, forerunner of Bullhead City. Captain
Hardy was an explorer, merchant, entrepreneur, miner,
farmer, public servant, among other things.
Bullhead City is a prosperous and thriving river community with
a colorful history. It was named for Bull’s Head Rock, an old
landmark located along the Colorado River. In the years of
steamboat travel, this natural land formation was used as a
navigation point. As the waters rose behind Davis Dam, creating
Lake Mojave, Bull’s Head Rock gradually receded, and today it’s
no longer distinguishable.
From
1852 to 1909, steamboats made regular trips up the Colorado
River from Port Isabel in the Gulf of California. These
sternwheeler riverboats played an important part in the town’s
early development. The site for Davis Dam was selected in 1902,
but construction did not start until 1942, then quickly
discontinued because of the Second World War. Construction
resumed in 1946, and the dam was completed in 1953.
With the success of Laughlin, Nevada,
Bullhead City itself has grown. It now looks forward to a bright
new future, with thousands of new residents working together,
making it a premier destination on the Colorado River. Is it
